I hope your holidays were filled with rest, joy and surrounded by friends and family. As the holidays wind down, I have been looking back at the amazing events the Eglinton-Lawrence community has hosted and my tenure as your local MP.

At the beginning of the year, I announced that I will not be seeking re-election as the Member of Parliament for Eglinton-Lawrence. I’m proud to have served an incredible community that always comes together and an honour to have represented this riding and be your voice since 2015.

My time as your Member of Parliament is not over yet - 2025 is just the beginning. I'm looking forward to sharing the rest of my time in office with the community, demonstrating the hardworking spirit, determination, and warmth of our riding of EgLaw.

Thank you for the valuable relationships along the way, as well as the confidence and pride you've entrusted me with. I invite you to reflect with me by taking a look at our 2024 recap here.

Our government will continue to work for you, even through Prorogation (read more about that below) and knows that it’s been a hard time for families; we will continue to be committed to ensuring that they get the support they need, such as the Canada Child Benefit whose next payment is coming up on January 20th.

Find more information on these updates and open federal funding grants below.  As always, don’t hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns related to federal matters by emailing my office at [email protected] or by calling 416-781-5583

Warm regards,

Hon. Marco Mendicino, P.C.

Member of Parliament for Eglinton-Lawrence

Federal Government Updates

 What is Prorogation?

A prorogation was called on January 6th, 2025, ending the 1st Session of the 44th Parliament.

Prorogation of Parliament will put a pause on the government. It allows the current government to remain in power, however, it ends all current proceedings, including scheduled committee meetings. This means, bills currently tabled, committee work, and studies will be ending. It will provide the new session of Parliament with a fresh slate.

Not to worry, all Members of Parliament will continue to aid their constituents in their respective ridings. These responsibilities will continue as normal.

A new session of Parliament will begin on March 24, 2025. Learn more here.

Job Gains Exceeded Projection in December

Statistics Canada has reported good news for the Canadian economy. The projected job growth has nearly quadrupled, with 91, 000 jobs being added to the market last December. This brings the Canadian unemployment rate down a notch to 6.7% in December.

Many of the jobs were full-time, in much needed industries, such as educational services, health care, and social assistance.

Our government is setting the foundation and supports for a strong Canadian economy in 2025.

Look at the statistics here.

Prime Minister Meets with Premiers to discuss Canada-US Relationship

Our government is focused on protecting what is most important: defending Canadians' interests. Despite our differences, we are committed to working together to ensure the protection and representation of all Canadians, which is why the Prime Minister met with provincial Premiers and members of Federal Cabinet in Ottawa this week.

We will stand united against the proposed U.S tariffs on Canadian imports by incoming President Trump. Our government is hopeful for a win-win outcome but will be ready to stand up for Canadians and the national interest, meaning readiness for all eventualities.

Take a look at the First Ministers' statement on the Canada-United States relationship here.

Launching of Youth Mental Health Fund Open Proposals

Youth are struggling from today's pressures stemming from a variety of issues ranging from the pressures of social media, affordability, and climate change to name just a few. Canada’s youth are our future, and it is crucial that they have the services and supports in their community from organizations they trust.

Last week, the Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, launched a call for proposals under the Youth Mental Health Fund. Organizations can apply for funding to increase access to mental health care for young people across Canada.

These community-based projects will expand access to supports and services to youth, underserved populations, and indigenous youth. Our government is committed to working with partners across Canada to ensure equitable access to mental health services. Learn more about the proposal here.

The deadline to submit a proposal is January 22, 2025, take a look at the applicant guide.
