Community Updates

Announcing federal funding for The Italian Chamber of Commerce of Ontario Canada (ICCO Canada) CAMERA program!

I was honoured to attend the Pentola d’Oro Awards gala to announce Federal funding for the Italian Chamber of Commerce of Ontario Canada (ICCO)’s new CAMERA program!

The federal government is supporting economic growth in Ontario by investing $375,000 in the CAMERA project to allow ICCO to assist over 30 Italian-Canadian businesses and entrepreneurs by offering them programming for networking, business planning, and product testing.

Thank you, ICCO, for a beautiful night celebrating Italian cuisine and the Italian-Canadian community!

Speaking at the Canadian Jewish Political Affairs Committee (CJPAC) Fellowship Conference

CJPAC fellows are the best and brightest politically engaged university students who are coming together from across the political spectrum to raise awareness about the issues facing the Jewish community and all Canadians.

They are bridge builders, and I enjoyed speaking with them about how combating antisemitism and supporting the Jewish community should be a multi-partisan effort.

Attending the Toronto Police Chief’s Gala

It was a pleasure to attend last night's Toronto Police Chief’s Gala for Victim Services Toronto. Community leaders gathered to support crime victims and ensure they get access to the crisis, trauma, and safety services they need.

Thank you to Chief Demkiw, Toronto Police Services, and law enforcement for all your work!

Federal Government Updates

A tax break for all Canadians and the Working Canadians Rebate

Things have been difficult for Canadians and our Eglinton-Lawrence community. While inflation and interest rates are declining, our communities have not yet seen that reflected in their household budgets.

Our government is taking concrete steps to ensure that we’re helping Canadians to afford the things they need and save for the things they want ahead of this festive season when family and friends begin to gather to celebrate.

Starting December 14, 2024, we are giving a tax break to all Canadians. We’re making the essentials like groceries, snacks, kids clothing, and more tax-free with a GST/HST exemption across Canada. The tax break is projected to last until February 15, 2025.

In addition to this exciting news, working Canadians will get some cash back with a new Working Canadians Rebate. Canadians who worked in 2023 and earned up to $150,000 will receive a $250 cheque in their bank account or mailbox in early spring 2025. That's 18.7 million hardworking Canadians that will get that extra help to buy what they need.

We’re providing real savings, for real relief, for Canadians at the cash register. Learn more about the tax break and the Working Canadians Rebate here.

Expanding the National School Food Program in Ontario

Our government is helping schools, children, parents, and families by ensuring kids do not go to school hungry. Through our School food program, we’re also  helping working families save hundred of dollars in grocery bills.

Earlier this week Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced an agreement with the Government of Ontario to increase school food programs in the province. That means healthy meals for 160,000 more kids in Ontario this school year and a two-child family could save an average $800 in grocery bills a year!

The National School Food Program is part of our federal government’s plan to put more money in your pocket. We’re helping teachers and making mornings a little easier for working families.

Find out more about the National School Food Program here.

Ontario Line - Twin Tunnel Shaft Groundbreaking

Earlier this week, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation was happy to announce a significant milestone for the construction of the Ontario Line.

Announced on May 11, 2021, the Ontario Line is a rapid transit project, expected to slash commute times for many Canadians in Toronto and the GTA.

Learn more about our other transit projects here.

The Ontario government has officially started excavating the launch shaft, the starting point of the Ontario Line’s downtown subway tunnels. In addition, Exhibition Station is currently undergoing upgrades to support its future role as a vital transit hub linking Canadians between the GO rail and the future Ontario Line Subway.

Take a look at our significant progress here.

New action to lower the cost of housing for Canadians

Our government’s housing plan is the most ambitious in Canadian history, investing into the building of nearly 4 million new homes. We are cracking down on corporate investors who buy up single-family homes, removing GST from student residences to build more student housing, and more.

Last week, the Deputy Prime Minister, and the Minister of Public Services and Procurement of Canada, announced significant progress in delivering on Canada’s Housing Plan. Here is just a hint of what our government is doing for Canadians.

1.     Canadians purchasing a home should be bidding against prospective homeowners, not against large corporate investors. That is why our government is seeking feedback from Canadians on ways to restrict purchase of existing single-family homes by large corporations. All Canadians are invited to provide comments here by December 19, 2024.

2.     We’re incentivizing Canada’s educational institutions to build more student housing to ease the rental housing pressures for students. The amendments include removing the GST from student residence builds. We’re inviting you to share your feedback by January 20, 2025 here.

Our government is continuing to take new actions to ensure Canadians have homes, you can continue to read more on what we’re doing here.

Launching of Youth Mental Health Fund Open Proposals

Youth are struggling from today's pressures stemming from a variety of issues ranging from the pressures of social media, affordability, and climate change to name just a few. Canada’s youth are our future, and it is crucial that they have the services and supports in their community from organizations they trust.

Last week, the Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, launched a call for proposals under the Youth Mental Health Fund. Organizations can apply for funding to increase access to mental health care for young people across Canada.

These community-based projects will expand access to supports and services to youth, underserved populations, and indigenous youth. Our government is committed to working with partners across Canada to ensure equitable access to mental health services. Learn more about the proposal here.

The deadline to submit a proposal is January 22, 2025, take a look at the applicant guide.
