Eglinton-Lawrence Community Update, November 15
November 15, 2024

logo

These last two weeks have been cold ones, and I hope you have been keeping warm! This week in Eglinton-Lawrence, I was proud to attend a number of events within the community to show our gratitude and honour those who sacrificed their lives to protect our freedoms and values. May we honour those who continue to serve today and never forget the sacrifices made by those who came before us.

It has been a busy 2 weeks, and I am excited to share with you the latest Community and Federal updates. Our government is working to ensure that we’re protecting the bodily autonomy of Canadians, driving our Climate Plan forward, and uplifting Community organizations.

A friendly reminder of some upcoming Federal Benefits:

  1. November 20th, 2024: Canada Child Benefit
  2. November 27th, 2024, Canada Pension Plan & Old Age Security
  3. November 29th, 2024: Veteran Disability Benefit

Find more information on these updates below. As always, don’t hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns related to federal matters by emailing my office at [email protected] or by calling 416-781-5583

Community Updates

Marking Remembrance Day in the Community

On Remembrance Day, I attended the 96th Annual Sunrise Ceremony at Prospect Cemetery along with colleagues and other community leaders. It is always an honour to begin Remembrance Day with this beautiful and solemn ceremony.  Thank you to the Royal Canadian Legion for organizing  and the invitation.

Afterwards, I was happy to join staff and students at Marshall McLuhan Catholic Secondary School at their Remembrance Day Service and am thankful for the opportunity to speak to a new generation of the importance of this day and remembering the sacrifices made to protect our freedoms.

Unveiling of Villa Charities Italian Canadian Immigrant Tribute

I had the pleasure of being present for the official unveiling of the Villa Charities Italian Canadian Immigrant Tribute, which will be permanently installed at the Columbus Centre in the heart of Eglinton-Lawrence.

As the son of an Italian-Canadian family whose names are on two of the Tribute plaques, it is an honour to be part of a community that helped to build Canada from the ground up.

With this tribute, we pay homage to the generations of those who preceded us. We will live up to their legacy through the values that got us here: hard work, integrity and public service. Sempre avanti!

Announcing Funding for the National Holocaust Remembrance Program

Last Friday, I was proud to introduce my colleague Minister Saks, who announced a historic investment through the allocation of $5 Million to launch the National Holocaust Remembrance Program at the Toronto Holocaust Museum. We were joined by Deborah Lyons, Canada’s Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combatting Antisemitism, and Dara Solomon, Executive Director of the Museum, who both spoke passionately about the need to continue to invest in Holocaust education - now more than ever.

As thousands of Canadians have now visited the Toronto Holocaust Museum and bore witness to the testimony of survivors, this funding will look to continue to this work. As Holocaust denial, distortion, and antisemitism are on the rise, it is essential to ensure that the Holocaust is taught effectively and respectively.

Watch my remarks here.

At the Rally for Humanity

Now more than ever, we must build bridges across communities, embrace our Jewish neighbours and friends, and stand united against antisemitism.

Last weekend, I attended the Rally for Humanity and signed the Proclamation of Unity Against Antisemitism. Combatting antisemitism requires Unity, and in the spirit of Canadian values, we must all work to ensure the protection and safety of the Jewish community.

Federal Government Updates

Capping Pollution and Driving Canadian Innovation

Last week, our government introduced draft regulations to put a limit on greenhouse gas pollution from oil and gas production; we are setting a cap equivalent to 35 percent below 2019 levels.

Our government is encouraging production growth while ensuring commitment to a strong, low-carbon economy.

Canadians and communities see the effects of climate change – the damage caused by extreme weather events is reflected in the price of groceries, insurance, and local taxes. That is why we’re doing our fair share to decrease pollution and address climate change; learn more here.

Launch of Canadian Artificial Intelligence Security Institute (CAISI)

Last Tuesday, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry announced the launch of the Canadian Artificial Intelligence Security Institute (CAISI), which aims to strengthen Canada’s ability to protect against AI risks. The CAISI will leverage knowledge from various other institutes within Canada, as well as the Vector Institute in Toronto.

Our government is committed to leading AI to drive economic growth, increase productivity, and create new opportunities for Canadian workers.

The institute is part of the government’s overall strategy to promote safe and responsible development of AI technology, building trust among Canadians and Businesses.

Protecting Reproductive Freedom and Access to Reproductive Health Care

The Hon. Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, announced new actions to protect reproductive freedom. Our federal government will introduce legislation that will require charities providing pregnancy counselling to be more transparent.

This means registered charities that provide pregnancy option counselling, and other reproductive health support, would be required to disclose if they do not provide abortions, birth control, or referrals to these services.

These new measures aim to ensure Canadians get accurate information on all their reproductive health care options and builds on existing health care measures.

Canada Community Security Program

Everyone deserves to be and feel safe in their community. With antisemitism and hate-crimes on the rise, places of worship, schools, and community centres need better support to protect themselves and the people who access their services.

In response, our government has replaced the Security Infrastructure Program with the stronger and improved Canada Community Security Program with increased funding, expanded eligibility and more coverage for security infrastructure.

In addition to schools, places of worship, and community centres, funding has been expanded to include:

In addition to security equipment, minor security renovations, security and emergency assessment plans, and security training, it will also now include limited-time security personnel and funding will cover 70% of eligible project expenses.
