Last week, I was in Nanaimo, British Columbia with our Liberal caucus to cement our priorities for this parliamentary session. This week, my colleagues and I are back in Ottawa to continue working to build more affordable homes, expand access to affordable dental care, ensure our students have enough to eat through the National School Food Program, enhance safe long-term care for seniors and more.
In this update, I want to draw your attention to the King Charles Coronation Medal Nomination program. Designed to recognize significant contributions to our country, I am honoured to be selected as a nominating partner to celebrate the achievements of 20 outstanding individuals in Eglinton-Lawrence. The deadline to nominate someone in our community to receive this special recognition is October 11th, 2024.
Please find more details on the award and the nomination process below. As always, don’t hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns related to federal matters by emailing my office at [email protected] or by calling 416-781-5583.
Warm regards,
Hon. Marco Mendicino, P.C.
Member of Parliament for Eglinton-Lawrence
The King Charles III Coronation Medal Program was created to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III. It is the first Canadian commemorative medal to mark a coronation and I am honoured to be selected as a nominating partner to recognize 20 individuals who have made significant contributions to improving our community, and country at large.
To be eligible for a nomination, the individual must:
Please find more information and nominate and an individual in our community here by October 11th, 2024.
An event will be held to recognize those selected to receive this honour in late November.
Dental care is health care - but for too long, high costs have kept it out of reach for too many. Thanks to the Canada Dental Care Plan, over 600,000 Canadians now have access to affordable dental care. Over 7,000 people have already benefited from the program here in Eglinton-Lawrence!
More Canadians are gaining access to cleanings, fillings, dentures, and more. The program is currently open to eligible seniors, adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate, and children under 18. Find out if you or your child is eligible here.
Today the Canada Child Benefit is hitting the bank accounts of thousands of families. This is more money to help with the cost of groceries, bills, extracurriculars, and everyday expenses that come with having kids.
Our government introduced the Canada Child Benefit in 2016 and it has helped lift hundreds of thousands families out of poverty. Over 9,000 families in Eglinton-Lawrence benefit from this program.
Every child deserves a fair start in life. Alongside these payments, we are also getting healthy school meals to kids through the National School Food Program, creating more childcare spaces, and making medications and dental care more affordable.
We were met with fantastic weather at the Columbus Centre last week to kick off September with Festa del Pomodoro! It was great to join the community alongside my good friends MP Judy Sgro and Councillor Mike Colle as we celebrate the best local Italian sauce with Villa Charities.
Yesterday, Canada abstained on a UN resolution that was blatantly one-sided against Israel, ignored the October 7th Hamas Terrorist attacks, and denied the connection of the Jewish People to the land of Israel.
My colleague MP Anthony Housefather and I issued a joint statement which reiterates our position and strong encouragement for the federal government to have voted against this UN resolution. The abstained vote does not align with our longstanding and principled foreign policy, which supports Israel's right to exist and setting conditions for a just and lasting peace.
We will continue to speak up on behalf of our constituents and the communities we represent, in particular as we approach the one year anniversary of the October 7th attacks. Please find the entirety of our joint statement here.
As part of my work as Chair of the Canada-Philippines Interparliamentary Group, I was pleased to co-host a panel discussion on Canada's stake in the South China Sea alongside Ambassador Austria.
We heard from experts about the importance of security, trade and biodiversity, underpinned by the rules-based international order. Special thanks to the parliamentarians, senators, and members from the public service for coming together to learn more about this important issue.
Our government is committed to addressing the housing crisis by removing barriers to home building, repurposing federal lands for housing, increasing rental and affordable units, supporting first-time home buyers, and much more.
This week, we announced new mortgage reforms to help more Canadians own a home, including:
Our government is utilizing every possible tool at our disposal to help more Canadians become homeowners. Read more about these new measures here.
To create good-paying opportunities for our workforce, all students must have fair access to post-secondary education, regardless of financial ability. Everyone should be able to afford to seek post-secondary education to secure a well paying job.
That is why our government announced the following supports for students this academic year:
With these new supports, nearly 600,000 students are benefiting from grants and over 650,000 students are benefiting from interest-free loans. This work is helping more students to afford school, go back to school, and advancing our workforce.
Canada's immigration strategy has long been a pillar of our economy, reflecting our compassionate values and responding to the needs of our country. To protect the integrity of our Immigration system, our government is implementing changes to address individuals who seek to exploit or abuse it.
To protect the sustainability of our migration pathways, reduce fraud and relieve pressures across various industries, and ensure those who come to Canada are set up for success, our government has implemented the following measures:

Canada’s annual inflation rate fell to 2 per cent last month, which is the lowest rate since February 2021, and marks the eighth consecutive month that inflation has been within the Bank of Canada’s target range.
The Bank of Canada has lowered interest rates three times, making Canada the first country in the G7 to do so. While there is still more to accomplish, this is good news for Canadians.
Yesterday, the Canadian Climate Institute reported that Canada's emissions saw a slight drop last year. This is encouraging progress which demonstrates the effectiveness of our government's current policies and highlights the need stronger action.
The report shows that emissions were cut by 0.8% last year, a total of 702 megatonnes of carbon dioxide. That is the equivalent of taking 69 million cars off the road. Unfortunately emissions from the oil and gas sector, making up 31% of Canada's national total, continue to rise which offset last year's progress.
The largest drop in emissions comes from the technology sector, with a 62% cut in emissions compared to 2005. This is encouraging news, and reinforces the need to invest in energy-efficient solutions to combat the climate crisis while continuing the push to reduce reliance on oil and gas. Read more here.
As part of our government's plan to provide 400,000 kids with school lunches and to improve food security for all Canadians, our government has launched two programs: The new School Food Infrastructure Fund and the renewed Local Food Infrastructure Fund.
The School Food Infrastructure Fund will provide not-for-profit organizations with funding to support school food programming across Canada. Organizations are encouraged to apply for funding to improve infrastructure and equipment for school food programming by October 4th, 2024. Program objectives and the application process can be found here.
The renewed Local Food Infrastructure Fund is providing funding for businesses and organizations with projects aimed at increasing food security and access to local and nutritious food through strengthened infrastructure.
Small Scale Projects will begin the application processes on October 1st, 2024. Learn more here.
In the wake of rising hate across the country, the Government of Canada remains committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive society with resilient communities.
In effort to combat systemic racism and promote inclusivity, a new priority on combatting anti-Asian racism has been established for the Events component.
The Events component of the Multiculturalism and Anti-Racism Program (MARP) provides funding to community-based events that:
There is no fixed deadline to submit a funding application under the Events component of the MARP, as applications are accepted on a continuous basis.
